Grows well in USDA Zones 3–11. Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. Chamomile isn't picky about soil but prefers well-drained, sandy, or average soil with a neutral pH. It is a resilient plant that handles cool spring weather very well.
Sowing Method
Direct Seed (Recommended): Surface sow directly into the garden in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Crucial: Do not cover! Chamomile seeds need light to germinate. Press them gently onto the surface of the soil.
Temperatures & Germination
Seeds germinate best at 65-70°F (18-21°C). Keep the soil surface consistently moist using a gentle misting spray. Germination takes 7-14 days. Ensure the seedlings are never allowed to dry out until well-rooted.
Plant Spacing & Care
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to 6-8 inches apart. Chamomile is extremely low-maintenance. Water regularly until established, but it thrives with moderate care thereafter.
Harvesting
Pick flowers as soon as they open fully. Gently pull them off the plant or snip them just below the flower head. Harvest regularly to encourage the plant to produce more blooms throughout the season. Dry flowers in a cool, shaded, well-ventilated spot before storing in an airtight jar.
