Planting Guide
Broccoli Instructions
Sowing Method
Transplant (Recommended): Sow 2 seeds/cell in 72-cell plug flats 1/4" deep. Seedlings are ready to transplant in 3–4 weeks.
Direct Seed: Sow 3 seeds per foot, ½" deep. Thin to one plant in each group.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks sharply at 86°F (30°C). If possible, keep soil 75–80°F until germination, then reduce air temp to ~60°F.
Growing: Optimum growth occurs between 60–70°F (16–21°C), though this specific variety will produce well in warmer summer conditions.
Seasonal Planting Guide
Early Spring Crop: Transplant outdoors 10–18" apart in rows 18–36" apart.
Fall Crop: Start seedlings in May; transplant in June–July.
Winter Crop: In regions where temps rarely drop below 32°F (0°C), transplants can be set out from September to February.
Culture
Broccoli prefers a well-drained, fertile soil high in organic matter (pH 6.0–7.5). A consistent supply of moisture throughout the growing season is critical; irrigate regularly for best results.
Pests & Diseases
Repel flea beetles and root maggots on seedlings using floating row covers. Use Bacillus thuringiensis for cabbage worms. Prevent disease with long crop rotations (no brassicas). Seed lots test negative for black rot and black leg. *Note: Negative tests do not guarantee a seed lot is 100% disease-free.
Harvest & Storage
Cut the center head before flower buds open. Hydrocool or ice immediately. Harvest secondary side shoots regularly to encourage continued production. Store at 32°F (0°C), 95–98% relative humidity, with good air circulation for 10–14 days.
