Hardiness Zones & Soil
Lotus can survive in USDA Zones 4–10 when tubers are protected from freezing. In zones 4–7, container-grown lotus must be moved indoors for winter. Lotus love heat and require a sunny location receiving 6+ hours of direct sunlight. They must be planted in heavy loam, aquatic clay, or topsoil. Never use standard potting soil containing peat, wood chips, or perlite, as these materials will float and quickly foul your water.
Seed Preparation (Crucial Step)
Scarification is mandatory: Lotus seeds have an incredibly hard, waterproof shell. You must break this shell for water to enter. Using sandpaper, a file, or a knife, carefully scrape the dimpled end of the seed until you see the cream-colored interior. Stop immediately to avoid damaging the embryo inside.
Sprouting & Planting
Drop the nicked seeds into a glass of warm water (75–85°F). Change the water daily to prevent bacteria buildup and rot. Sprouting typically occurs within 5-21 days. Once the sprouts are a few inches long and fine roots appear, gently press the seeds into a container filled with aquatic soil. Place the container inside your decorative bowl, ensuring 2-4 inches of water covers the soil line. For best results, use a container of at least 10-12 inches in diameter; tiny bowls often result in no blooms.
Care & Fertilization
Maintain a constant water level, adding fresh water as it evaporates. The first few leaves will float on the surface, followed by "aerial" leaves that stand upright above the water. Wait until aerial leaves develop before fertilizing. Push aquatic fertilizer tablets deep into the soil away from the crown every 3-4 weeks during summer.
Note: Lotus grown from seed may not bloom the first season; flowering often occurs in the second growing cycle, depending on sunlight, temperature & container size.
Overwintering
Lotus tubers must not freeze solid. In colder climates (Zones 4-7), allow the foliage to die back after the first frost, trim the stems above the water line, and move the entire container to a cool, dark, frost-free location (like an attached garage or basement) for winter. Keep the soil damp but not completely submerged until spring.
