Hardiness Zones, Soil & Light

Grows beautifully across the US in USDA Zones 3–11 as a warm-season annual. Plant in full, intense sun. Moss Rose actually prefers poor, sandy, or rocky soils with excellent drainage. Rich soils or heavy clay can cause the plant to produce fewer flowers and suffer from rot.

Sowing Method

Direct Seed: Sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
Transplant: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost.
CRITICAL: Do not cover the seeds with soil! They require sunlight to germinate. Simply press them gently into the surface of the soil to ensure good contact.

Temperatures & Germination

Seeds require warm soil to germinate, optimally between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Keep the soil surface consistently moist (but not waterlogged) using a misting spray bottle until sprouts emerge, typically in 10-14 days.

Space seedlings 10-12" apart in the garden. Moss Rose is a trailing, spreading plant that will quickly fill in gaps to create a dense, beautiful floral carpet or spill gracefully over the edges of hanging baskets.

Care & Maintenance

Once established, Portulaca is extremely drought tolerant due to its succulent leaves. Water only during prolonged dry spells; overwatering will damage the roots. Deadheading is not required, though trimming back leggy stems mid-summer can rejuvenate the plant and encourage a fresh flush of blooms.
