Planting Guide
Cabbage Instructions
Hardiness Zones & Transplants
USDA Zones 3-10. Cabbage is a hardy cool-season crop.
Early Spring/Fall: Sow 2 seeds/cell ¼" deep, 4-6 weeks before planting outdoors. Space transplants 12-18" apart in rows 18-36" apart.
Winter Crop: Can be grown where winters are mild (rarely below 32°F/0°C). Set out transplants from Sept to Feb.
Direct Seeding
Sow 3-4 seeds every 12", ½" deep, in rows 24-36" apart. Thin to one plant in each group once established.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks sharply at 86°F (30°C). Keep soil warm until germination.
Growing: Optimum growth is between 60-70°F (16-21°C), but it will produce good crops under warmer summer conditions.
Culture
Cabbages are heavy feeders. They require fertile soils in a pH range of 6.5-7.5, supplied with consistent irrigation throughout the growing period.
Maintenance: Preventing Splitting
Early varieties may burst if heavy rain/irrigation follows a dry spell. To prevent splitting: Slow the plant's growth by cultivating close to the base to sever some roots, or by grasping the head and slightly twisting the plant.
Pests & Diseases
Repel early pests with row covers. Adhere to long crop rotations with non-brassicas. Seed lots test negative for black rot and black leg. *Note: Negative tests do not guarantee a seed lot is 100% disease-free.
Harvest & Storage
Relatively young heads (still green and actively growing) store best. Store only disease-free heads. Ideal conditions are 32°F (0°C), at 95-98% relative humidity, with good air circulation.
