Planting Guide
Carrot Instructions
Soil & Culture
Carrots require well-drained soils, with a pH range of 6.0–6.8. Deep, loose, and fertile sandy loams or peat soils with good moisture-holding capacity will grow the straightest and smoothest roots.
Direct Seeding
Sow from early spring to midsummer. Plant seeds 1/4–1/2" deep in a 2"-wide band (about 30 seeds/ft.), or in single rows. Thin young seedlings to 3/4–2" apart, depending on root size desired. Keep weed-free by shallow hoeing. Cover exposed crowns with soil to prevent greening.
Crucial Care: Moisture & Emergence
Do not allow the soil to crust! Carrot seedlings can take 1–3 weeks to emerge depending on temperature and moisture. You must consistently sprinkle the soil surface to keep it soft and moist until emergence is complete, otherwise delicate sprouts will be trapped underground.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Rates climb steadily to a sharp peak at 86°F (30°C). Wait for warm soils if possible, but keep surface moist.
Pests & Diseases
Avoid planting in ground recently in sod to prevent wireworms and rust flies (use fabric row covers to exclude adults). Practice a strict 3-year crop rotation to prevent Alternaria and Cercospora leaf blights, which can severely reduce yield.
Harvest & Storage
Harvest Window: Best harvest period lasts about 3 weeks (longer in cool fall weather). Make successive sowings at 3-week intervals for a continuous supply.
Winter Storage: For the ultimate winter stash, plant about 100 days before expected fall frost. Store cleanly at 32°F (0°C) with very high 98% relative humidity.
