Cosmos sulphureus - Easy-to-grow cosmos for gardens and pollinator plantings.
Vigorous plants flower over a long season, creating rich color in the garden and a vibrant food source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Plant architecture is tall but open and airy, making them less prone to lodging (falling over) than Cosmos bipinnatus types. Produces 1 1/2–2″ wide, double and semidouble blooms in brilliant shades of orange and gold.

USDA Zones 2–11. Grown as a warm-season annual across all US regions. Highly adaptable; thrives in almost any soil type. Excellent for beds, containers, and vibrant mass plantings.
Sowing Method
Transplant (Recommended): Sow into 50-cell plug flats 5-7 weeks before planting out, covering seeds lightly. Harden off and transplant out after danger of frost.
Direct Seed: Sow after last frost, covering seeds lightly.
Temperatures & Germination
Germination: 7-10 days at 68-72°F (20-22°C).
Direct Sowing: Wait until soil temperature is consistently above 60°F (16°C).
Plant Spacing & Support
Space plants 9-12" apart. Expert Tip: Wider spacing creates stronger, thicker stems. Tall varieties may occasionally benefit from wind protection or horizontal support (like Hortonova netting).
Pinching & Deadheading
Pinching young plants encourages branching and produces a bushier plant with more blooms. Deadheading (removing spent flowers) is required to ensure continuous blooming all summer long.
Harvest & Alternate Uses
Cut Flowers: Harvest when petals are just opening, but not yet flattened. (Note: Cosmos do not have a long vase life, typically dropping petals after 5 days).
Natural Dyes: Flowers are famously used to create rich natural dyes for fiber and fabrics!
