Soil Requirements
Highly adaptable to most soil types. However, if your primary goal is to harvest large taproots, they are best grown in deep, rich, moist soil.
Sowing Method
Direct Seed (Recommended): Sow anytime after the last spring frost, or plant 6 weeks before the first frost in the fall. Sow shallowly (about one seed per inch).
Crucial Step: Seeds require some light to germinate, so do not cover them deeply.
Temperatures
Germination takes 7-21 days. Seeds germinate much better in cool soils.
Spacing & Root Caution
Thin established plants to 4–6" apart in rows 12–18" apart. Expert Tip: While dandelion can be started in flats and transplanted, it is best not to transplant if you are growing for root harvest, as transplanting disturbs and stunts the root shape.

Leaves are prone to mildew, which is exacerbated by humidity and plant stress. Mildew on leaves will severely reduce root growth. To reduce mildew likelihood: keep the soil consistently moist, strictly minimize overhead irrigation, and ensure plants are properly spaced to allow good air circulation.

Leaf Harvest: Pick leaves during the first year while they are still young, tender, sweet, and before the plant begins flowering.
Root Harvest: Harvest the thick taproots after one full year of growth. Once dried and roasted, they make an excellent, healthy coffee substitute.
