Banana Seed Instructions
Culture & Soil Prep
Bananas demand full sun (at least 8-10 hours daily) and rich, organically heavy, well-draining soil (pH 5.5–7.0). They are heavy feeders and require constant moisture, but their fleshy rhizomes will rot quickly if left in standing water.
Sowing Method (Scarification)
Indoors: Banana seeds have an extremely hard coating. Soak them in warm water for 24-48 hours, changing the water daily. Lightly nick the seed coat with a file or sandpaper (scarification) before sowing ½" deep in a warm, moist seed-starting mix.
Temperatures & Germination
Optimum Germination: 75–85°F (24–29°C). A seedling heat mat is absolutely essential to provide continuous bottom heat. Germination is notoriously erratic and can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months. Do not let the soil dry out.
Plant Spacing
Space in-ground plants 8–10 feet apart. Select a sheltered location protected from strong winds, which will easily shred the large, delicate leaves. If container growing, eventually up-pot to a very heavy, sturdy 20-30 gallon planter.
Care & Overwintering
Feeding: Bananas are incredibly hungry. Feed them regularly with a balanced, potassium-rich fertilizer throughout the warm growing season.
Overwintering: The foliage will die back after a frost. In cooler zones, dig up the corm or bring the container indoors before temperatures drop below 40°F (4°C) to overwinter in a dormant state.
Harvest & Storage
The main stem (pseudostem) will produce fruit only once and then die back, but new "pups" will emerge from the base. Harvest the entire bunch when the individual fruits plump up and the green skin begins to show hints of yellow. They will finish ripening at room temperature off the plant.
