Culture & Soil Prep
Cherry trees require full sun (at least 6-8 hours daily) and deep, fertile, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. They are extremely sensitive to poor drainage and waterlogged roots, so avoid low spots or heavy clay soils unless heavily amended.
Sowing Method (Stratification)
Cold Stratification Required: Cherry pits must undergo a cold chilling period. Mix seeds with slightly damp sand or peat moss in a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate for 90 to 120 days. Afterward, plant them ½ to 1 inch deep in pots with moist seed-starting mix.
Temperatures & Germination
Optimum Germination: 65–75°F (18–24°C) after the required stratification period. Keep the soil evenly moist and provide bright, indirect light until seedlings emerge, typically within a few weeks after being brought into the warmth.
Plant Spacing
Space standard in-ground cherry trees 15–20 feet apart to ensure adequate airflow, which is critical to preventing fungal diseases in the canopy.
Pruning & Care
Pruning: Prune annually during late winter dormancy. Sweet cherries are typically trained to an open-center or modified leader shape to maximize sunlight penetration into the canopy.
Harvest & Storage
Cherries must ripen fully on the tree as they will not continue to sweeten once picked. Harvest when fruits are uniformly dark and slightly soft. Keep the stems attached if you plan to store them. Refrigerate unwashed cherries immediately for up to a week.
