Culture & Soil Prep

Grapes require full sun (at least 7-8 hours daily) and deep, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Avoid low spots where cold air settles. Work compost into the soil prior to planting, but avoid overly rich soils which encourage foliage at the expense of fruit.

Sowing Method

Indoors: Grape seeds benefit greatly from cold stratification. Place seeds in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag and refrigerate for 30-60 days. Afterwards, sow seeds ¼" deep in moist seed-starting mix. Keep warm and well-lit.

Temperatures & Germination

Optimum Germination: 70–85°F (21–29°C) after the stratification period. Germination can be slow and uneven, taking 2 to 4 weeks or more. Be patient and maintain consistent moisture.

Plant Spacing

Space vines 6–8 feet apart in rows that are 8-10 feet apart. Proper spacing allows for adequate airflow, which is critical for preventing fungal diseases on the foliage and fruit clusters.

Crucial First-Year Establishment

Establish the Trunk: During the first year, select the strongest, straightest shoot to become the main trunk. Tie it loosely to a training stake and aggressively prune away all other lateral side shoots.

Once the main trunk reaches the top wire of your trellis, pinch the tip to force horizontal branching (cordons).

Harvest & Storage

Grapes will not continue to ripen or sweeten after they are picked. Wait until the skin turns a pale, translucent yellow-green and they easily pull from the cluster. Taste-test a few grapes to confirm peak sweetness before harvesting the whole bunch. Store unwashed in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 weeks.
