Planting Guide
Mulberry Seed Instructions
Culture & Soil Prep
Mulberries are highly adaptable and will tolerate poor, rocky soils, but they truly thrive in full sun with well-draining, loamy soil (pH 5.5–7.0). They are somewhat drought-tolerant once fully established, making them an excellent low-maintenance tree.
Sowing Method
Cold Stratification Required: Mix seeds with lightly moist sand and refrigerate for 60 to 90 days. After the chilling period, sow seeds ¼" deep in a sterile, well-draining seed mix. Keep consistently moist and warm.
Temperatures & Germination
Optimum Germination: 68–75°F (20–24°C) after stratification. Maintain warm soil using a heat mat if starting indoors. Germination typically occurs within 14 to 30 days once brought into warmth.
Plant Spacing
Space standard trees 15–20 feet apart in the landscape. Because mulberries can grow quite large and drop berries, avoid planting them directly over driveways, sidewalks, or patios where staining could be an issue.
Pruning & Training
Dormant Pruning: Prune during winter dormancy to remove dead or crossing branches, control the overall height of the tree, and establish a strong framework. Mulberries can even be kept smaller in large containers or heavily pruned to maintain a bush-like habit.
Harvest & Storage
Fruits are fully ripe when they turn deep purple-black and detach easily from the stem. The easiest harvesting method is placing a clean tarp under the branches and gently shaking the tree. Consume or process quickly, as fresh mulberries are highly perishable and last only a few days in the refrigerator.
