Grows beautifully across the US in USDA Zones 3–11 (must be protected from frost in cooler zones by growing indoors or in a greenhouse). Thrives in partial shade or filtered sunlight. Requires rich, organically amended, and consistently moist soil.
Sowing Method
Preparation: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting.
Indoors: Sow 1/4" deep in a sterile, moist seed-starting mix. Cover with a humidity dome to retain moisture until seeds sprout.
Temperatures & Germination
Optimal soil temperature is 75-85°F (24-29°C). A heat mat is highly recommended to maintain warmth. Germination can be slow and irregular, taking 3 to 6 weeks. Be patient and keep soil damp but not waterlogged.
Plant Spacing & Care
Space plants 36-48" apart in the garden or plant individually in large containers. Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season and provide high humidity if grown indoors or in a greenhouse.
