Culture & Climate

USDA Zones 3–9 (Grown as Annual in hot regions). Green onions are exceptionally hardy and adaptable, though they may bolt (go to seed) under sustained heat above 85°F (29°C). They prefer full sun to partial shade and loose, well-drained, fertile soil. They tolerate cool soils and light frosts well. For a continuous supply, make succession sowings every 3-4 weeks from early spring through late summer. Can also be sown in the fall for overwintering in milder climates.

Sowing Method

Direct Seeding: Sow outdoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds ¼" deep in 2-3 inch wide bands or rows. Space plants about 2-3 inches apart. Pro-tip: "Hill" or mound soil around the base of the stems 2-3 times during the growing season to encourage longer, white blanched shanks.

Transplanting: Sow indoors 8-10 weeks before transplanting. Sow 4-6 seeds per cell in 72-cell trays to create ready-made clusters. Transplant the entire cluster outside, spacing the clusters 6-8 inches apart.

Temperatures & Germination

Optimum 60–75°F (15–24°C). Minimum 50°F (10°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Sprouts typically emerge in 10-14 days. Seedlings will look like tiny, folded blades of grass at first.

Pests & Diseases

Generally disease-resistant (resists pink root, thrips, and smut). Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues. Practice standard crop rotation, keeping them away from areas where other alliums were recently grown.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest anytime after stalks reach pencil thickness. You can pull the entire plant, or snip the greens an inch above the soil line to let the plant regrow for a continuous "cut-and-come-again" harvest. Store fresh scallions wrapped in a damp paper towel in the refrigerator crisper for up to 1-2 weeks.
