Culture & Climate
Hardy in USDA Zones 6–9. Hydrangeas require rich, porous, and consistently moist soil. They thrive in locations that receive dappled sunlight or morning sun and afternoon shade. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, which will scorch the leaves and wilt the flowers.

CRITICAL STEP: Hydrangea seeds are dust-like and require light to germinate. Fill a tray with pre-moistened, sterile seed-starting mix. Carefully sprinkle the seeds on top of the soil. Do not bury or cover them with soil.
Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your last spring frost. Mist the seeds lightly with a spray bottle to ensure contact with the soil without washing them away. Cover the tray with a clear plastic dome or wrap to maintain extremely high humidity.
Temperatures & Germination
Place the tray in a bright, warm location receiving bright indirect light (avoid direct sun which will cook the tray). Maintain a temperature of 65–70°F (18–21°C). Keep the soil surface consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 14–28 days, but can be irregular and erratic. Do not discard trays too early. Once tiny seedlings emerge, gradually remove the humidity dome to acclimatize them.
Care & Blooming Expectations
Transplant seedlings outdoors once they have several sets of true leaves and all danger of frost has passed. Patience required: Hydrangeas grown from seed will focus entirely on root and vegetative growth during their first years. It generally takes 3 to 4 full growing seasons (some may take longer) before the plant reaches a mature enough size to produce its first blooms. Keep soil well-watered, especially during hot summer droughts.
Pests & Color Control
Monitor for aphids and spider mites. Ensure proper plant spacing to allow airflow, which prevents fungal diseases like powdery mildew.
To control bloom color: For blue flowers, add aluminum sulfate to acidify the soil (pH 5.2-5.5). For pink flowers, add garden lime to create alkaline soil (pH 6.0-6.2).
