Hardiness & Climate
Zones 3–10 (Cool-season biennial grown as an annual). It is grown throughout the season in the North, and primarily during fall and winter in the South.
Sowing Method
Transplant: For earliest crops, sow 2 seeds/cell in flats 4–6 weeks before planting out (thin to 1 plant/cell).
Direct Seed: Sow 15 seeds/ft., ¼–½" deep, thinning fresh-market varieties to 4" apart and storage varieties to 10" apart.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks at 77°F (25°C).
Growing: Prefers mild or cool weather; heat can make bulbs fibrous or woody.
Plant Spacing
Space plants 4–5" apart in rows 12–18" apart.
Culture
Requires fertile, well-irrigated soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Consistent moisture promotes rapid growth, which is essential for a sweeter, tender, and better-tasting crop.
Pests & Diseases
Adhere to a preventive program including long crop rotations (no brassicas) and strict sanitation. Seed lots test negative for black rot and black leg. *Note: Negative disease tests do not guarantee a seed lot is 100% disease-free.
