Hardiness Varies by Species (USDA Zones 4–9). While many trees in this pack (like Spruce and Pine) are highly cold-tolerant, species like Camellia, Azalea, and Silk Tree are tender (Zones 6–9) and require winter protection in colder climates. Additionally, all Bonsai trees grown in shallow pots must have their roots protected from freezing temperatures during winter (such as in an unheated garage or cold frame). They require outdoor seasonal changes and winter dormancy to survive; they do not make good year-round indoor houseplants.

Mandatory Seed Prep (Scarification & Stratification)

CRITICAL STEP: Tree seeds have deep natural dormancy. They will generally not germinate if sown directly.

• Scarification (Hard Seeds): Seeds like Wisteria, Silk Tree, and Camellia have hard shells. Gently nick the shell with a file or soak them in warm water for 24 hours to let moisture in.
• Cold Stratification (Most Trees): Maples, Spruce, Cherry, Pine, Lilac, and Elm require a simulated winter. Place the seeds in a slightly damp paper towel or sand, seal in a ziplock bag, and refrigerate (35-45°F) for 30 to 90 days before planting. Check occasionally for mold or early sprouts.

Sowing & Germination

After the cold treatment, sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in sterile, well-draining seed starter mix indoors. Maintain a warm soil temperature of 65–75°F (18–24°C). Germination is highly erratic—some seeds may sprout in 2 weeks, while others take months. Do not throw away your trays too early! Keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Care & Growth Expectations

Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, transplant them into larger individual pots. Extreme patience is required: Growing trees is a multi-year project. It will take several years of vegetative growth before a trunk thickens enough for Bonsai wiring and training, or before flowering varieties (like Cherry or Wisteria) produce their first blooms.

Pests & Diseases

Young tree seedlings are highly susceptible to "damping off" (a fungal disease that rots the stem). To prevent this, never overwater, ensure excellent air circulation (a small fan helps), and always use sterilized seed-starting soil. Monitor older plants for aphids and spider mites.
