Culture & Climate

USDA Zones 10–11. Grow indoors year-round or bring inside for winter in Zones 3–9. This succulent is not frost-hardy; even light frost can damage it. It thrives in well-draining, gritty succulent or cactus soil mix (e.g., 50% potting soil, 50% perlite or pumice). Provide bright, indirect light.

Seed Handling & Sowing

Crucial Warning: Succulent seeds are incredibly tiny (dust-like). Open the seed packet carefully indoors away from wind.

Surface Sow Only: Fill a shallow tray with pre-moistened, sterilized succulent mix. Gently sprinkle the dust-like seeds over the surface of the soil. Do not bury them; they require light to germinate. Mist lightly with a fine spray bottle.

Temperatures & Germination

Optimum germination temperature is 65–75°F (18–24°C). Cover the tray with a clear plastic dome or wrap to maintain high humidity. Keep out of direct, harsh sunlight. Once tiny green specks (sprouts) appear, gradually remove the dome over a few days to acclimatize them to lower humidity. Best sown in early autumn or early spring; avoid sowing during hot summer months.

Watering & Dormancy Care

As a winter-grower, water the plant thoroughly when the soil is completely dry from Fall through Spring. Summer Dormancy: In the heat of summer, the plant will close its rosette tightly to conserve water (looking like a green rosebud). During this dormancy, water very sparingly—only enough to keep the roots from completely desiccating—to prevent fatal root rot.

Pests & Diseases

Overwatering is the biggest threat to this plant, leading quickly to stem or root rot. Ensure pots have drainage holes. Indoors, watch for common succulent pests like mealybugs or aphids, which can hide inside the tight rosettes.
