Grows beautifully across the US in USDA Zones 3–11. Plant in full sun. Alliums require loose, exceptionally well-draining soil—they will rot quickly in heavy, waterlogged clay. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH is ideal.
Sowing Method (Stratification)
Cold Chilling: Allium seeds benefit from a 4-6 week cold stratification period in the refrigerator before sowing. Sow seeds 1/4" deep in pots with a well-draining starting mix.
Temperatures & Germination
Germination takes place at 55-65°F (13-18°C). Sprouting can be slow, taking anywhere from 14 to 28 days. Keep the soil lightly moist and provide gentle light once green shoots emerge.
Plant Spacing & Care
Space plants 8-12" apart. The foliage tends to yellow and die back right as the flowers bloom, so plant them behind lower-growing perennials that can gracefully camouflage the lower leaves.
Harvesting & Maintenance
Cut flower stems when the globe clusters are beginning to show color for stunning, long-lasting cut arrangements. Alternatively, leave dried seed heads on the stems into autumn for unique structural garden interest and winter decor.
