USDA Zones 7–11. Once established, the Windmill Palm is incredibly tough and can withstand freezing temperatures and even light snow. They prefer rich, well-draining soil and a sunny to partially shaded location.
For Zones 3–6: Palm trees make fantastic patio plants! Grow them in large, heavy pots outdoors during the warm summer months, and bring them indoors to a bright, frost-free room before the first deep freeze of autumn.

Mandatory Seed Prep (Soaking)

CRITICAL STEP: Palm seeds have a tough, dormant exterior. They MUST be soaked before planting.

Submerge the seeds in a cup of warm water for 24 to 48 hours. Change the water daily to keep it fresh and warm. This vital step softens the seed coat and signals to the seed that it is time to wake up and grow.

Sowing, Heat & Germination Patience

After soaking, plant the seeds about 1/2 inch deep in a pot filled with a very well-draining, sterile seed starting mix (adding extra perlite helps).
Temperature is key: Palm seeds require consistent, warm bottom heat to sprout, ideally between 75–85°F (24–29°C). Cover the pot with a clear plastic dome or bag to maintain high humidity. Keep the soil damp, but never muddy.
Patience is required: Palm germination is notoriously erratic. Seedlings may appear in 30 days, or they may take up to 3-4 months. Do not throw your pots away too early!

Care & Growth Expectations

The first sprout will look like a thick blade of stiff grass. Once it appears, move the pot to a bright, warm location and remove the humidity dome. Keep seedlings evenly watered. Like most trees grown from seed, early growth is very slow as the plant focuses on establishing a deep taproot. It will take a few years before the iconic fan leaves and hairy trunk begin to fully form.

Pests & Maintenance

Windmill palms are generally highly pest and disease resistant outdoors. If overwintering them indoors as container plants, keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like spider mites or scale, which can be treated by wiping the fronds with insecticidal soap.
