Hardiness Zones & Soil
USDA Zones 3-11. Peas are a cool-weather crop. Ensure adequate fertility and a pH of 6.5–6.8. Expert Tip: Inoculate peas to encourage the formation of nitrogen-producing nodules on the roots; this enriches the soil, results in larger plants, and increases yield.
Sowing Method
Spring Crop: Direct seed in early spring as soon as soil can be worked. Sow ½–1" deep. Do not thin.
Fall Crop: Sow about 2 months before frost. Keep seeds well-watered to encourage good germination.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: 77–86°F (25–30°C). While peas germinate readily in cool spring soils, warmer temperatures provide the fastest emergence.
Spacing & Trellising
Sow seeds 1½–2" apart. Maxigolt grows to 30" tall; varieties under 3' can be grown unsupported in rows 12–18" apart. However, using a trellis net or chicken wire keeps vines upright, makes picking easy, and prevents rot if rainy weather coincides with harvest.
Pests & Diseases
Ensure well-drained soil and rotate crops out of legumes for at least three years to prevent pea root rot. Maxigolt is an excellent choice for a healthy garden.
Harvest
Pick when peas enlarge inside the pods. Maxigolt has a very forgiving harvest window and will retain its sweetness even if allowed to grow slightly larger before picking.
