Hardiness Zones, Soil & Light
Grows beautifully across the US in USDA Zones 3–11. Plant in full sun for the most prolific blooming. Hibiscus requires rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Hardy varieties will die back to the ground in winter and aggressively resprout in late spring, while tropical varieties act as annuals or container houseplants in colder zones.
Sowing Method
Seed Prep (Scarification): Soak seeds in warm water for 8-12 hours or gently nick the seed coat with a file before planting to improve germination.
Indoors: Sow 1/4" deep 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.
Direct Seed: Sow outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.
Temperatures & Germination
Seeds germinate in 14-21 days at optimal soil temperatures of 70-80°F (21-27°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until seedlings emerge. A seedling heat mat can greatly improve germination success.
Plant Spacing & Care
Space plants 24-36" apart to allow for their wide, bushy growth habit and to ensure proper airflow. Hibiscus are thirsty plants during hot summer days, so provide consistent, deep watering.
Pruning & Maintenance
Pinch back the growing tips of young plants to encourage branching and a more bush-like structure. Deadhead spent flowers to promote continuous blooming throughout the late summer and fall.
