Planting Guide
Strawberry Seed Instructions
Culture & Soil Prep
Strawberries prefer a sunny to partially shaded location with moist, well-drained soil richly fertilized with compost or aged manure (pH 6.5–6.8). Prepare beds 6–8 months ahead of planting to control perennial weeds.
Sowing Method
Indoors: Sow seeds thinly in March/April (North) or mid-June/early July (South). Press seeds firmly into a moist, soilless mix—do not bury them deeply. Keep consistently moist. Transplant to plug trays when large enough, then up-pot before setting outdoors.
Temperatures & Germination
Optimum Germination: 60–75°F (16–24°C). Keep soil temps within this range if possible. Plants typically emerge in 14–21 days.
Plant Spacing & Crown Depth
Space plants 12–18" apart in rows 3–4' apart. Crucial Step: Set plants with roots straight down into the soil, making absolutely sure the middle of the crown is perfectly level with the top of the soil.
Critical Fertilization Warning
Avoid fertilizing at the time of planting! Doing so may trigger tender top growth that is highly prone to cold injury and damage.
Crucial First-Year Establishment
Remove Buds: Encourage the plant to put its energy into establishing a strong root system by completely removing all flower buds for the first 6 weeks after setting out your transplants.
Remove Runners: For the best long-term yield, we highly recommend that you aggressively remove all the runners during the entire first year.
Harvest & Storage
Day-neutral plantings will remain optimally productive for up to 2 growing seasons (do not renovate day-neutral varieties). In the North, harvest midsummer through Oct. In the South, harvest late winter through early June, pausing in extreme summer heat. Store unwashed berries at 32°F (0°C) for 3–7 days.
