Calendula officinalis - Clear bright orange blooms reminiscent of gerberas.
Also known as pot marigold or Scotch marigold, this variety produces beautiful 2–3 1/2″ blooms. It boasts a high resin content, making it highly sought after for medicinal use in antiseptic tinctures and healing skin ointments. USDA Zones 2–11. Highly adaptable and easy to grow across all US regions as a hardy annual. Grows best in rich, well-drained soil and thrives in beds, borders, containers, mass plantings, and cottage gardens.
Sowing Method
Direct Seed (Recommended): After the danger of frost has passed, sow seeds at a depth of 1/4". Make 2-3 successive sowings 2-3 weeks apart to ensure continuous blooms from summer until heavy frost.
Transplant: Alternatively, sow seeds indoors 4-5 weeks before planting out.

Seeds typically germinate in 7-14 days. The optimum soil temperature for germination is 70°F (21°C).

Space established plants 6-12" apart. Calendula performs excellently in both ground beds and containers.
Harvesting Cut Flowers
For the longest vase life in bouquets and floral arrangements, harvest the stems when the blooms are about 50% open.
Edible Flower Preparation
To use culinarily, harvest once the flowers are fully open. Crucial Step: Pull the petals off before using in dishes. Do not eat the calyx or the flower centers. Always remove the petals from the flower base before consuming, as the base can be quite bitter.
