Allium cepa - Earliest long-day overwintering onion for the North.
Our trials have shown T-448 to be larger and about a week earlier than Bridger when overwintered. Bulbs are also more rounded in shape. Not as early or as large as Bridger when spring sown, however. Exceptional bolt tolerance when overwintered.

Hardiness Zones
Zones 3–9 (Biennial grown as Annual). T-448 is a long-day variety bred for northern latitudes, excelling in overwintering.
Sowing Method
Transplant: Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Cover with 1/4" soil.
Direct Seed: In April/May, sow 1/4–1/2" deep in 2" wide bands. (Subtract 10–15 days from maturity date if transplanting).
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: 77–86°F (25–30°C). Rates decline sharply outside this peak range.
Plant Spacing
Transplants: Space 4" apart in rows 12–18" apart.
Direct Seed: Thin to 1.5–2" for highest yields, or 3–4" apart for larger onions.
Culture
Requires full sun and well-drained soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Shallow-rooted; maintain shallow cultivation for weeds and provide at least 1" per week of rain/irrigation, especially during bulbing.
Pests & Diseases
Adequate air circulation and crop rotation reduce foliar disease risk. Seed is tested and certified free from white rot and parasitic nematodes.
Harvest & Storage
Harvest: When 50% of tops fall over and necks soften, pull and cure in a well-ventilated space out of direct sunlight for about 2 weeks. Sun-curing in field is OK for 2–7 dry days before moving indoors.
Storage: Once completely dry, clip tops and roots. Store in bags or shallow boxes near freezing with 65–70% humidity.
