Hardiness Zones & Soil
USDA Zones 3-10 (Grown as a warm-season annual). Medium-rich soil with pH 6.0–6.8 preferred. Fertilize accurately since excess nitrogen causes rampant foliage growth, rot, and delayed ripening.
Transplanting
Don't start too early! Leggy, root-bound, or flowering transplants can cause stunting. About 5–6 weeks before transplanting, sow 1/4" deep. At first true leaf, pot-up to larger cells. Plant deeply to encourage adventitious rooting along the stem. Water seedlings with a high-phosphate fertilizer solution at planting to boost early yields.
Fall Direct Seeding
If direct seeding for a fall crop, sow seeds 10 to 12 weeks before the first expected autumn frost. Mix 1/2 cup of an all-purpose organic fertilizer into the soil per 10 feet of row prior to planting. Cover seeds with 3/4 to 1 inch of fine soil. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until the seedlings emerge. When seedlings are about 2 to 3 inches tall, thin them to space plants 12 to 18 inches apart in 36-inch wide rows.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks sharply at 86°F (30°C). Keep mix at 75–85°F (24–29°C) with moderate moisture until emergence.
Growing: 60–70°F (16–21°C). Avoid exposing unprotected plants to consecutive nightly temperatures below 45°F (7°C).
Pruning & Trellising
In rows 4–6' apart, space determinate (bush) varieties 12–24" apart. To trellis, "basket-weave" by pounding 5–6' stakes every 2–3 plants. Determinate varieties generally do not need heavy pruning. If needed, consider thinning leaves to increase airflow.
Pests & Diseases
Avoid wet leaves, and avoid handling plants when wet. Do not use or handle tobacco products near plants to prevent transmitting Tobacco Mosaic Virus. Manage plant debris and utilize crop rotations.
Harvest & Storage
Any fruit breaking color will still ripen completely post-harvest. Store blemish-free, near-ripe fruit 4–7 days at room temperature in darkness. Store longer by picking less-ripe, and keeping at 45–60°F (7–16°C). Storing too cold sacrifices flavor.
