Solanum Melongena Instructions
Hardiness Zones
Zones 4–12 (Warm-Season Annual). Eggplants are extremely tender; wait to transplant outdoors until late spring or early summer when the weather has thoroughly settled and soil is warm.
Sowing Method
Start Indoors: Sow in flats 6–8 weeks prior to planting outdoors. Sow 4 seeds/in., ¼" deep. After true leaves form, thin to 2–3" apart or transfer to plug trays.
Temperatures
Germination: 80–90°F (27–32°C). Seed will not germinate in cool soil.
Growing: 70°F (21°C) after emergence.
Hardening Off: Reduce temp to 60°F (16°C) for a week before transplanting.
Plant Spacing
Space transplants 18" apart in rows 30–36" apart. (Or 2 rows on plastic mulch, 18–24" between plants).
Culture & Maintenance
Requires fertile, well-drained soil (pH 6.2–6.8). Avoid over-fertility: Too much nitrogen causes bushy plants with very little fruit. Plants may be pruned and staked to keep the fruits straight.
Pests & Diseases
Use fabric row covers for newly set transplants to control flea beetles and Colorado Potato Beetles (crush their orange egg masses). Practice a 4–5 year crop rotation to prevent Verticillium wilt (a soil-borne fungus).
Harvest & Yield
Clip the fruit stem with shears to avoid damaging the plant. Pick fruits of the desired size regularly to encourage continuous, prolific production.
