Basil Instructions
Culture & Soil Requirements
Requires full sun and moderately rich, moist soil. Basil is not drought tolerant and can be damaged by heat stress. Regular moisture throughout the growing season helps to ensure a good, flavorful crop.
Sowing Method
Direct Seed (Recommended): Plant seeds 1/4" deep, 2-3 seeds per inch. Firm the soil over the seeds. Thinning is not strictly necessary, but a final spacing of 4-8" apart produces the healthiest, fullest plants.
Transplant: Sow indoors 6 weeks prior to setting out. Transplant to the field when seedlings have 3-4 sets of true leaves.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: 65-70°F (18-21°C). Emergence typically occurs in 5-10 days at these temperatures. Maintain steady 70°F (21°C) if starting indoors.
Plant Spacing
Final spacing should be 4-8" apart in rows 18" apart.
Pelleted Seed Care
If using pelleted seed, consistent soil moisture during the germination period is critical to break down the pellet. Store pelleted seeds in a cool, dry place and use within one year of purchase.
Harvesting Strategy
Begin light harvesting once plants are established. Harvest in the early morning when temperatures are cooler to prevent wilting. A full harvest should be completed just before the plants start to flower. Cut the entire plant 4-6" above the ground to promote a vigorous second growth.
Critical Storage Warning
Basil leaves are extremely sensitive to cold and will quickly turn black if chilled. Do not store harvested basil at temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Handle leaves carefully to avoid bruising.
