Pampas Grass Instructions
Hardiness Zones, Soil & Light
Grows beautifully across the US in USDA Zones 3–11. Plant in full sun. Pampas grass is highly adaptable to most soil types but requires excellent drainage to prevent rot. Once established, it is exceptionally heat and drought-tolerant.
Sowing Method
Transplant (Recommended): Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Sow 5-10 seeds per cell or pot.
CRITICAL: Do not cover the seeds with soil! They require light to germinate. Simply press them gently into the surface of a moist seed-starting mix.
Temperatures & Germination
Maintain warm soil temperatures of 65-75°F (18-24°C). Germination typically occurs within 14-21 days. Keep the soil surface consistently moist using a gentle misting spray until the grass seedlings are well established.
Plant Spacing & Growth
Space plants 36-48" apart to allow for their massive, clumping growth habit. They will rapidly expand to fill large areas, making them an ideal, fast-growing choice for a living fence or dramatic landscape border.
Harvesting & Maintenance
Harvest plumes in late summer for dried floral arrangements by cutting them right as they fully emerge but before they begin to shed. In late winter or very early spring, cut the old foliage back heavily to the ground to make room for fresh new growth.
