Named for its fluffy, oval-shaped flower heads that perfectly resemble little rabbit tails, Bunny Tail Grass is a delightful and drought-tolerant ornamental annual. It is a favorite in children's gardens, coastal landscapes, and container borders. Planting Guide
Bunny Tail Grass Instructions
Culture, Climate & Soil
Grown as an Annual in USDA Zones 4–10. Choose a location with full, direct sunlight. Important Soil Note: Bunny Tail Grass actually thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky, well-draining soil. Avoid heavily fertilized or rich, soggy soils, which will cause the grass to grow too quickly, become weak, and flop over. They are highly drought-tolerant once established.
Sowing Method
Direct Seeding Preferred: Like most ornamental grasses, Bunny Tails have delicate roots and dislike transplant shock. It is best to sow them directly into the garden after all danger of frost has passed.
Do not bury deeply: Sprinkle the seeds over loosened soil and press them lightly into the surface, or cover with no more than 1/8 inch of fine soil. They require some light to germinate. Space seeds or thin young seedlings to about 10–12 inches apart to allow room for the clumps to expand.
Temperatures & Germination
Wait until the soil has warmed to at least 65–70°F (18–21°C). Keep the seedbed lightly moist (using a gentle mist to avoid washing the surface seeds away) until germination, which usually takes 10–15 days.
Care & Self-Seeding
Once established, plants require very little water. Overwatering will lead to root rot. They are highly pest and disease resistant. If you want them to return next year, leave a few of the fluffy seed heads on the plant at the end of the season to naturally drop their seeds into the soil!
Harvesting & Drying for Crafts
For Dried Arrangements: To prevent the fluffy heads from shattering or falling apart, harvest the stems in mid-to-late summer *just* after the heads have fully opened and turned a creamy tan color, but before they dry out completely on the plant. Tie them in small bunches and hang them upside down in a dark, dry, well-ventilated room for 2-3 weeks.
