Lactuca Sativa Instructions
Hardiness & Climate
Lettuce is a hardy, cool-weather crop and can be planted with your earliest worked soil. Young plants properly hardened off can survive temperatures as low as 20°F (-6°C).
Sowing Method
Transplant (Head Lettuce): Sow 3–4 weeks before field planting. Barely cover with fine soil. Direct Seed (Baby Leaf): Sow 4–6 seeds/inch in rows at least 2" apart. Cover lightly to 1/8" and firm gently. Sow every 2–3 weeks for a continuous supply.
Thermal Dormancy & Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks sharply at 68°F (20°C).
Crucial Note: Lettuce seeds enter "thermal dormancy" and germinate poorly in soils above 75°F (24°C). If starting indoors, utilize shade and misting to keep trays cool.
Plant Spacing
For Butterhead types (like Buttercrunch), space transplants 10–12" apart in rows 15–18" apart.
Harvest & Storage
Head Lettuce: Cut at base, keeping wrapper leaves for handling loss. Wash off sap and cool immediately.
Baby Leaf: Harvest 1" above the growing point when leaves are 3–4" long for cut-and-come-again yields.
Storage: Keep cold at 35–40°F (1–4°C) with high humidity. Delicate types like butterhead keep less than 14 days.
