Culture & Soil Prep

Lemons prefer full sun (8+ hours daily) and slightly acidic, well-draining soil (pH 5.5–6.5). If planting in containers, use a specialized citrus/cactus potting mix. Good drainage is essential for healthy root development.

Sowing Method

Indoors: Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting. Sow seeds ½" deep in a moist, sterile seed-starting mix. Cover pots with a plastic dome to retain high humidity. Keep the soil moist but never soggy.

Temperatures & Germination

Overwintering: In Zones 3-8, trees must be brought indoors or into a heated greenhouse before the first frost. Place near a bright south-facing window.

Pruning: Prune in early spring to maintain shape, remove crossing branches, and improve airflow in the canopy.

Harvest & Storage

Lemons can be left on the tree for several months after ripening. Harvest when the rind is fully yellow and the fruit yields slightly to pressure. Store at room temperature for up to a week, or in the refrigerator crisper drawer for up to a month.
