Planting Guide
Orange Tree Seed Instructions
Culture & Soil Prep
Oranges prefer full sun (8+ hours daily) and slightly acidic, extremely well-draining soil (pH 5.5–6.5). If planting in containers, use a specialized citrus/cactus potting mix. Good drainage is non-negotiable for healthy root development.
Sowing Method
Indoors: Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting. Sow seeds ½" deep in a moist, sterile seed-starting mix. Cover pots with a plastic dome to retain high humidity. Keep the soil moist but never soggy.
Temperatures & Germination
Optimum Germination: 75–85°F (24–29°C). A seedling heat mat is highly recommended to keep soil temperatures warm. Germination typically takes 3 to 6 weeks.
Plant Spacing
Space in-ground trees 12–15 feet apart. If planting in pots, upgrade pot size gradually as the tree grows, eventually settling it into a 15–20 gallon container.
Critical Watering Warning
Citrus trees are highly susceptible to root rot if left in standing water. Always allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. Ensure all containers have large drainage holes.
Pruning & Overwintering
Overwintering: In Zones 3-8, trees must be brought indoors or into a heated greenhouse before the first frost. Place near a bright south-facing window.
Pruning: Prune in early spring to maintain shape, remove crossing branches, and improve airflow in the canopy.
Harvest & Storage
Oranges only ripen fully while on the tree—they will not sweeten after being picked. Wait until the rind is fully orange and the fruit yields slightly to pressure. Store at room temperature for a few days, or in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 weeks.
