Planting Guide
Papaya Seed Instructions
Culture & Soil Prep
Papayas demand full sun and thrive in warm, sheltered locations. They absolutely require well-draining, rich loamy soil (pH 6.0-6.5). They are extremely susceptible to root rot, so ensure water drains quickly and never pools around the base.
Sowing Method
Indoors: Plant seeds ½" deep in a warm, sterile seed-starting mix. Papaya roots are fragile, so sow 3-4 seeds directly into a large, deep pot to avoid transplanting later. Keep consistently moist and warm.
Temperatures & Germination
Optimum Germination: 75–85°F (24–29°C). A heat mat is crucial if growing in a cooler climate. Germination usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. Keep seedlings in a very sunny, warm location.
Plant Spacing & Gender
Space in-ground plants 8–10 feet apart. Because papayas can be male, female, or bisexual, it's best to grow 3-4 plants to ensure pollination. Wait until they flower to identify gender (females have large flowers close to the stem, males have small flowers on long stalks), then cull excess males if space is limited.
Care & Feeding
Fertilizing: Papayas are heavy feeders. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or compost regularly during the growing season.
Wintering: They are extremely sensitive to cold. Below 50°F (10°C) growth stops; freezing temperatures will kill the plant. Overwinter container plants in a warm, sunny room.
Harvest & Storage
Harvest fruits when the skin turns one-third to half yellow. They will continue to ripen at room temperature until fully soft and yellow. Once ripe, store in the refrigerator for a few days. Green papayas can also be harvested earlier for use in savory salads and dishes.
