Fig Seed Instructions
Culture & Soil Prep
Fig trees thrive in full sun with slightly alkaline, rich, and loamy well-draining soil (pH 6.0–6.5). Incorporate compost before planting. Good drainage is vital, as they do not tolerate standing water.
Sowing Method
Indoors: Sow seeds on the surface of a sterile, moist seed-starting mix and press lightly into the soil. Do not cover them deeply, as fig seeds require light to germinate. Keep covered with a humidity dome until sprouts appear.
Temperatures & Germination
Optimum Germination: 75–80°F (24–27°C). Using a seedling heat mat is highly recommended to maintain warm soil. Germination can be slow and irregular, taking anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks.
Plant Spacing
Space in-ground trees 10–15 feet apart to allow for an expansive canopy. If growing in containers, use at least a 15-20 gallon pot for mature trees to restrict root growth and encourage fruiting.
Winter Protection Warning
While figs are somewhat cold hardy once established, trees in Zones 6 and below must be heavily mulched and wrapped if planted in-ground. Container trees should be moved into an unheated basement or garage (35-45°F) for winter dormancy.
Pruning & Training
Prune established trees heavily during late winter dormancy. Remove dead wood and crossing branches to keep the center open for sunlight and air circulation. Since figs produce on new wood, regular pruning encourages a heavy crop.
Harvest & Storage
Figs do not ripen off the tree! Harvest only when the skin turns a deep golden-yellow, the fruit feels soft to the touch, and the neck droops slightly. They are highly perishable—eat fresh within 2-3 days, or preserve by drying and making jams.
