Growing figs from seed is an exciting horticultural adventure for patient gardeners. They make beautiful ornamental container plants and can eventually bear fruit. Seed Prep & Sowing
Surface Sow Only: Fig seeds are very small and require light to germinate. Fill a tray with pre-moistened, sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix. Sprinkle the seeds lightly over the surface and gently press them into the soil.
Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your last frost. Mist the seeds with a spray bottle to settle them. Cover the tray with a clear plastic dome or wrap to maintain high humidity.
Temperatures & Germination
Place the tray in a warm, bright location (indirect sunlight). Maintain a warm soil temperature of 70–85°F (21–29°C). Keep the soil surface consistently moist but never waterlogged. Germination usually occurs within 14–28 days, but can be irregular. Once seedlings appear, gradually remove the humidity dome and provide bright light.
Care & Fruiting Expectations
Transplant seedlings into larger pots once they develop true leaves. Patience is required: Fig trees grown from seed typically take 3 to 5 years (or more) to mature and produce their first harvest. Keep young trees well-watered to establish deep roots. Prune in late winter while dormant to shape the tree and control its size.
Pests & Diseases
Fig trees are generally highly pest-resistant. In sandy soils, they can be susceptible to root-knot nematodes. In excessively humid climates, fig rust (a fungal issue causing leaves to drop) can occur; ensure good air circulation. Once fruiting begins, you may need to protect the sweet figs from birds and squirrels!
