Planting Guide
Marigold Instructions
Hardiness Zones & Soil
Grown universally across the US in USDA Zones 2–11 as a warm-season annual. Marigolds prefer full sun and average, well-draining soil. Feed moderately. An optimal soil pH is 6.0-7.5. Note: Excessively rich soil will produce lush foliage but fewer blooms.
Sowing Method
Transplant (Recommended): Sow into a 72-cell flat 4-6 weeks before planting out, lightly covering the seed. For flowering in packs, sow 8 weeks before desired bloom time. Transplant out only after all danger of frost.
Direct Seed: Sow 1/4" deep after the last frost.
Temperatures & Germination
Optimum Germination: Rapid emergence in 4-7 days at 75-80°F (24-27°C).
Growing Note: Exceptionally high summer temperatures can cause plants to temporarily stall and decline in growth and blooming until the weather cools.
Plant Spacing
Space French Marigolds 8-12" apart. (For reference: Gem Marigolds require 12", and larger African Marigolds require 12-18").
Pinching & Deadheading
Pinching: Pinching back the growing tips of young plants encourages branching and a bushier habit. Deadheading: Regularly removing old, spent flowers is required to force the plant to continually produce new blooms.
Harvest & Vasing
If using as a cut flower, harvest when the blooms are fully open but still have tight centers to ensure the longest vase life.
Edible Flower Preparation
Marigold petals have a floral flavor with hints of citrus and spice, making them an excellent garnish for salads, desserts, and rice dishes. Crucial Step: Always remove the petals from the flower base before consuming, as the green base and heel can be quite bitter.
