Planting Guide
Watermelon Instructions
Hardiness Zones & Climate
Zones 3–11 (Warm-Season Annual). Watermelons require consistently warm conditions. Plastic mulch and row covers aid in early crops and better yields, especially in northern regions.
Sowing Method
Transplant (Recommended): Sow indoors 1 month (no sooner!) before planting out. 2 seeds/cell, ½–1" deep. Reduce water/temp for a week to harden before transplanting. Do not disturb roots.
Direct Seed: Sow 1–2 weeks after last frost when soil >70°F (21°C). 3 seeds every 18–36", thinning to 1 plant/spot.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: 80–90°F (27–32°C). Rates peak sharply at 86°F (30°C).
Growing: Maintain seedlings at 75°F (24°C).
Plant Spacing
Space plants 2–3' apart in rows 6–8' apart. (Alternatively, transplant 18" apart if thinned to 1 plant per cell).
Culture
Requires light, well-drained soil (pH 6.5–7.5) with southern exposure. Keep soil moist early on, but do not water the last week before fruits are ripe (overwatering causes bland flavor). Remove row covers when female flowers appear.
Pests & Diseases
Protect against cucumber beetles with row covers or organic insecticides (pyrethrin/azadirachtin). Avoid "Sudden wilt" (a cold-weather stress syndrome that causes plants to collapse late in summer) by maintaining good fertility and irrigation.
Harvesting & Ripeness
3 Signs of Ripeness:
1. The tendril nearest the fruit stem attachment is browning/dead.
2. The spot resting on the ground turns from greenish-white to yellow/cream.
3. Flicking the melon produces a dull, hollow sound (unripe melons have a sharp, high-pitched tone).
Storage: Hold at 45-50°F (7-10°C) with 85-95% humidity for 2-3 weeks.
