Acer palmatum - Famous for brilliant autumn foliage and elegant bonsai potential.
Japanese Maple trees are a spectacular, delicate centerpiece for any landscape or zen garden. Famous for their beautifully lobed leaves that transition into fiery shades of red, orange, and gold in the autumn, they are universally adored by nature lovers. Growing maples from seed is a deeply rewarding, long-term horticultural project and is highly prized by Bonsai enthusiasts around the world.
Important Note on Genetic Variation: Maple trees grown from seed are not exact clones of grafted cultivars (such as the famous 'Bloodgood'). They will display natural genetic variation. This means seeds harvested from a red maple may produce offspring with leaves in unique shades of green, bronze, or vibrant red. This diversity is the true joy of growing maples from seed!

Planting Guide
Japanese Maple Tree Seed Instructions
Culture, Climate & Bonsai Wintering
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8. Young seedlings are less cold-tolerant than mature trees and should be protected during their first few winters. Maples require well-draining, slightly acidic soil. They naturally thrive as understory trees, meaning they prefer dappled sunlight or morning sun with afternoon shade. Hot, direct afternoon sun can severely scorch their delicate leaves. Crucial Bonsai Note: If growing your maple in a shallow bonsai pot, you must protect its roots from hard freezing. Overwinter potted bonsai in an unheated garage or cold frame (they need the chill of winter to break dormancy, but not extreme freezing).
Mandatory Seed Prep (Soak & Cold Stratification)
CRITICAL STEP: Maple seeds have deep natural dormancy. They will NOT sprout if planted dry and warm.
1. Soaking: First, place the seeds in a cup of warm water and let them soak for 24-48 hours to soften the outer shell.
2. Cold Stratification: Place the soaked seeds inside a slightly damp (not dripping wet) paper towel or sphagnum moss. Seal them in a ziplock bag and place them in the refrigerator at 35–45°F for 90 to 120 days. This simulates a long winter. Check occasionally for mold or early sprouts.
Sowing & Germination
After the 90-120 day cold treatment, plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in pots filled with sterile, well-draining seed-starting or bonsai mix. Keep the soil warm, ideally around 65–75°F (18–24°C), and consistently moist. Germination for tree seeds is highly erratic—some may sprout in 3 weeks, while others take much longer. Do not throw away your trays too early!
Care & Growth Expectations
Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, they can be carefully transplanted into larger individual pots. Keep young seedlings out of harsh winds and scorching afternoon sun. Patience is required: Trees grow slowly. It will take a few years of vegetative growth before the trunk thickens enough to begin bonsai wiring, training, or significant pruning.
Pests & Diseases
Maples are generally resilient, but young seedlings can be susceptible to "damping off" (a fungal issue causing the stem to rot). Prevent this by avoiding over-watering and ensuring good air circulation. Monitor older plants for aphids and scale, which can be treated with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
