Hardiness & Climate
USDA Zones 2-11. Lettuce is a hardy, cool-weather crop adaptable to a wide range of US climates. Young plants properly hardened off for 3–5 days can survive temperatures as low as 20°F (-6°C).
Sowing Method
Transplant (Head Lettuce): Sow 3–4 weeks before field planting. Barely cover with fine soil or vermiculite.
Direct Seed: Sow 4–6 seeds/inch in rows at least 2" apart. Cover lightly to 1/8" and firm gently. Sow every 2–3 weeks for a continuous supply.
Fall Direct Seeding: If direct seeding for a fall crop, sow 10 to 12 weeks before the first expected autumn frost. Before planting, mix 1/2 cup of all-purpose organic fertilizer into the soil per 10 feet of row. Cover seeds with 3/4 to 1 inch of fine soil. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until seedlings emerge. When seedlings are about 2 to 3 inches tall, thin them to space plants 12 to 18 inches apart in rows 36 inches wide.
Pelleted Seed Care & Storage
Watering is critical: Pelleted seed requires consistent, moderate soil moisture throughout the germination period. An initial watering splits the pellet, but if the soil dries out before germination finishes, the seed will fail.
Storage: Pelleting shortens shelf life. Use within one year of purchase. Store in an air-tight container in a cool, dark, dry place to protect from humidity fluctuations.
Thermal Dormancy & Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks steadily at 68°F (20°C).
Crucial Note: Lettuce seeds enter "thermal dormancy" and germinate poorly in soils above 75°F (24°C). While the priming process in pelleted seeds helps broaden this range, you must utilize shade and misting to keep trays cool if starting seeds during hot weather.
Harvest & Storage
Head Lettuce: Cut at base, keeping wrapper leaves for handling loss. Wash off sap and cool immediately.
Storage: Keep cold at 35–40°F (1–4°C) with high humidity. Head lettuce will keep 14–20 days under proper conditions.
