Zea Mays Instructions

Hardiness Zones & Soil

USDA Zones 3-11. Sweet corn is a tender, warm-season annual. It thrives in full sun and rich, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0–6.8. Wait to plant until all danger of frost has passed.

Sowing Method

Direct Seed: Sow 3/4–1" deep, 6–7" apart (or 2 seeds every 9", thinning to 1 plant). Successive plantings can be made through early summer, though extending the season with different maturity varieties is preferred.

Temperatures

Optimum Germination: Peaks steadily at 86°F (30°C). Untreated seeds (like organic varieties) need a minimum soil temperature of 65°F (18°C). Delay sowing if soil is colder to prevent seed rot.

Plant Spacing & Pollination Layout

Space rows 30–36" apart. Critical: Arrange corn in blocks (squares or rectangles) of at least 4 rows rather than single long rows. Wind pollination requires this block formation for well-filled ears.

Harvest Indicators

Ready when kernels are full and "milky," generally indicated by a drying and browning of the ear silks. Corn is usually ready to eat 18–24 days after ear silks first show (faster in warmer weather).

Critical Isolation Warning

Extensive crossing of super sweet (sh2) varieties like Natural Sweet with non-super sweet varieties will cause tough, starchy, ruined kernels in both types. You must prevent cross-pollination. Use one of these methods:

1. Plant super sweet varieties at least 300 feet from non-super sweet varieties.
2. Stagger plantings by a 12-day difference and separate by 25 feet.
3. Plant varieties that mature at least 12 days apart and separate by 25 feet.
