Culture & Climate
Prefers full sun and rich, moist, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5–6.8. Extremely heat-tolerant and thrives during mid-summer when cool-season greens fail. Provide a sturdy trellis, fence, or netting for support.
Sowing Method
Transplanting: Start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last expected frost. Nicking or soaking seeds in warm water for 24 hours prior to sowing can improve germination speed. Plant out after all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures consistently stay above 55°F (13°C). Space plants 12–18" apart along a trellis.
Direct Seeding: Sow directly outdoors in late spring once soil has fully warmed up. Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2" deep, spaced 12" apart in rows 3–4 feet apart.

Optimum soil temperature for germination is 70–85°F (21–29°C). Germination typically takes 10–21 days. Keep soil evenly moist until seedlings are well established.

Malabar Spinach is generally robust, but watch out for seedling damping-off in overly wet, cool indoor soils—ensure good air circulation and avoid over-watering. Minor leaf spot or root-knot nematodes can occasionally occur in excessively soggy soils.
Harvest & Storage
Harvest succulent young leaves and tender stem tips regularly (pinch back to encourage bushier growth and prevent flowering). Store harvested leaves in a breathable bag in the refrigerator for up to 3–5 days.
