Planting Guide

Abelmoschus esculentus Instructions

Hardiness Zones & Climate

Annual. Okra thrives in warm weather and can be grown in USDA Zones 2-11 as a summer annual. It requires consistently warm conditions. Wait to transplant or direct seed until after all danger of frost has passed and the soil is fully warmed.

Sowing Method

Transplant: Start 4–5 weeks ahead of transplanting. Sow 3 seeds per 2" pot/cell, 1/4" deep. Thin to 1 plant. Do not disturb roots when transplanting.
Direct Seed: Sow 1/2" deep, 2" apart, after frost danger when soil is at least 70°F (21°C). Thin to final spacing.

Temperatures

Optimum Germination: Peaks sharply at 86°F (30°C). Maintain soil mix temp between 80–90°F (27–32°C) for fast, even germination.

Plant Spacing

Space plants 12–18" apart in rows that are 36" (3 feet) apart. Use row covers for added warmth to plants and soil early in the season.

Harvest

Harvest promptly by clipping pods when they are 3–4" long to keep plants productive. Oversized pods quickly become tough and fibrous.
