Turnip Instructions
Hardiness & Climate
USDA Zones 2-10. Turnips are a widely adaptable cool-season crop tolerant of moderate frost. They perform best when grown in early spring or fall across most of the US.
Sowing Method
Direct Seed: Sow from early spring through late summer. Plant seeds 1/4–1/2" deep in 2–4" wide bands. (Turnips do not transplant well and must be direct seeded).
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks at 77°F (25°C). Turnip seeds germinate well in a broad range of cool to moderate soil temperatures.
Plant Spacing
Space seeds 1" apart (approx. 35 seeds/ft.) for small early turnips, or thin to 2" apart for larger, mature roots. Space rows 12–18" apart.
Culture
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Consistent moisture is required to prevent the roots from becoming woody and bitter.
Pests & Insects
Floating row covers installed immediately at the time of sowing are highly recommended to keep the turnips free of destructive flea beetles and cabbage root maggots.
Harvesting Stages
Early Harvest: Young, radish-sized turnips are ready in about 30 days (roots are smoothest when small).
Mature Harvest: Full-size roots are ready in 40–50 days.
Storage Guide
Short Term (With Greens): Store at 32°F (0°C) and 95% relative humidity for 10–14 days.
Long Term (Topped): Fall-harvested Purple Top turnips can have their greens removed (topped) at harvest. Store these bare roots at 32–40°F (0–4°C) with 90–95% humidity for an impressive 4–6 months.
