Cantaloupe Instructions
Soil & Hardiness
USDA Zones 3-11. Tender Annual. Thrives in light, well-drained soil with a pH of 7.0 and southern exposure. Plastic mulch and row covers make for earlier crops and better yields, especially in the North.
Sowing Method
Transplant (Recommended): Sow indoors 1 month (no sooner!) before transplanting. Plant ¼" deep.
Direct Seed: Sow 1-2 weeks after last frost when soil is above 70°F (21°C).
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: 80–90°F (27–32°C), peaking around 86°F (30°C). Reduce to 75°F (24°C) after emergence. Reduce water/temp a week prior to transplanting to harden off.
Plant Spacing
Transplant outdoors 2–3' apart in rows 6' apart. Handle seedlings carefully; do not disturb roots when transplanting.
Watering (Crucial Step)
Good moisture is vital early on. However, do not water during the last week before fruits are ripe, as overwatering at this stage causes bland, watery fruit.
Pests & Diseases
Protect against cucumber beetles with row covers (remove when female flowers appear). Beware of "sudden wilt" in late summer, caused by cold stress on plants with heavy fruit loads.
Harvest: The "Full Slip" Method
Watch for skin color changes and browning of the tendril near the stem. Harvest at Full Slip: meaning the fruit should easily separate from the vine with a gentle, light tug.
Storage Guide
Store ripe netted melons (like cantaloupes) at a chilly 36–41°F (2–5°C) with 90–95% humidity.
They will hold for a few days at room temperature, but chilling significantly extends their storage life.
