Planting Guide

Phaseolus Vulgaris Instructions

Culture & Soil

Choose well-drained soil with a pH range of 6.5–6.8. Provider tolerates cool soils better than other beans, but ensure daytime soil temperatures average at least 60°F (16°C) to prevent poor germination. Tip: Nitrogen-fixing inoculants can help increase yields.

Direct Seeding

After the last frost date, direct sow seeds about 2" apart and 1" deep, in rows 20–36" apart.

Temperatures

Optimum Germination: 70–90°F (21–32°C), peaking sharply around 86°F (30°C) as shown in our germination guide.

Succession Planting

For a continuous harvest supply throughout the season, make successive sowings every 2–3 weeks through midsummer.

Pests & Diseases

Pests: Mexican bean beetles and potato leafhoppers can be managed with organic insecticides like pyrethrin or azadirachtin.
Disease Prevention: Plow under or compost bean straw in fall. For Sclerotinia (white mold), use wider row spacing to promote leaf and soil drying. Practice a strict 3-year crop rotation. Note: All our bush bean seeds are produced in regions certified free of halo blight.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest: Pick regularly to encourage continuous new pod set.
Storage: Store harvested green beans at 40°F (5°C) and 90% relative humidity for 7–10 days.
