Light & Soil
Best suited for USDA Zones 9-11 outdoors. In cooler regions (Zones 3-8), grow in large containers and move to a bright, frost-free location during winter. Provide bright, filtered light—intense midday sun may scorch leaves. Use rich, well-draining potting soil or compost-amended garden soil.
Sowing Method
Preparation: Seeds have a hard coat; remove the orange fuzz, then soak seeds in warm water for 24-48 hours. Nicking the dark outer shell with a file can also speed up water absorption.
Sowing: Plant seeds 1" deep in a loose, sterile starting mix. Maintain high humidity with a dome and keep pots in a warm area.
Temperatures & Germination
Patience is required—germination can take anywhere from 4 weeks up to 6 months. Maintain consistent soil temperatures of 75-85°F (24-29°C) using a heat mat. Keep the substrate moist but avoid waterlogging to prevent seed rot.
Care & Watering
Once established, maintain moderate soil moisture, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings. Fertilize monthly during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced fertilizer.
