Grows beautifully across the US in USDA Zones 3–11. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Balloon flowers prefer slightly acidic, well-draining loamy soil (pH 5.8-6.8). They develop a deep taproot, making them quite drought-tolerant once established.
Sowing Method
Transplant: Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.
Direct Seed: Sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
CRITICAL: Do not cover the seeds with soil! They require light to germinate. Press them gently into the soil surface to ensure good contact.
Temperatures & Germination
Seeds germinate in 14-21 days at optimal soil temperatures of 65-70°F (18-21°C). Keep the soil surface consistently moist using a gentle misting spray to avoid washing the tiny seeds away.
Plant Spacing & Care
Space plants 12-18" apart. Because of their fleshy taproot, they deeply resent being transplanted once established, so choose their permanent location carefully. They are low maintenance and rarely require staking.
Harvesting & Maintenance
