Planting Guide
Sunflower Seed Instructions
Culture & Climate
Grown as an Annual in all USDA Zones (2–11). Sunflowers are incredibly heat-tolerant but are highly sensitive to frost. Choose a location with full, direct sun and loose, well-draining soil. Because they grow tall and heavy, planting them in a sheltered spot away from high winds is ideal. As heavy feeders, they appreciate soil amended with compost.
Sowing Method
Direct Seeding Highly Recommended: Sunflowers quickly develop a long taproot and deeply resent root disturbance. It is best to sow them directly into the garden after all danger of frost has passed.
Plant seeds ½ to 1 inch deep. Space seeds 6 inches apart, and thin seedlings to 12–24 inches apart once they have two sets of true leaves. If you must start indoors, use biodegradable peat pots to minimize root shock when transplanting.
Temperatures & Germination
Wait until the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (16°C), with optimal germination occurring between 70–85°F (21–29°C). Germination is typically fast, taking 7–14 days. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged until sprouts emerge.
Pests & Wildlife
Protect your seeds! Birds and squirrels love sunflower seeds and young sprouts. You may need to protect freshly planted beds with netting. Watch out for slugs and snails when seedlings are small. Ensure good air circulation to prevent downy mildew and rust on mature leaves.
Harvest & Care
For cut flowers, harvest early in the morning when the petals are just beginning to open. For harvesting edible seeds, wait until the back of the flower head turns brown and dry, and the seeds become plump. You may need to tie a paper bag or cheesecloth over the maturing head to save the seeds from hungry birds!
