Culture & Environment
Thrives in well-drained, fertile soils with a pH of 6.5. Abundant phosphorus and calcium are needed for the best results. Cold weather is buffered and earliness increased by using black plastic mulch and lightweight fabric row covers. Crucial: Remove row covers in sunny weather above 85°F (29°C) to prevent blossom drop and heat damage.
Transplanting (Required)
Sow seed indoors about 8 weeks prior to transplanting. Sow 1/4" deep. Germination is very slow in cool soil. When first true leaves appear, transplant into 2" or 4" pots. Transplant out after frost when soil is warm and weather is settled. Ideal seedlings have buds, but no open flowers. Water-in transplants using a high phosphorus solution.
Temperatures
Optimum Germination: Peaks sharply at 86°F (30°C). Maintain soil temperatures at 80-90°F (27-32°C) until emergence.
Growing Seedlings: Approx. 70°F (21°C) days and 60°F (16°C) nights.
Plant Spacing
Space pepper plants 12-18" apart in rows 24-36" apart. (Or 2 rows on poly/paper mulch, 18" between plants).
Common Beginner Mistake
Big bushy plants with NO peppers? This is often caused by an excess of nitrogen fertilizer, or hot/cold temperature extremes during the flowering period which causes the plant to drop its blossoms before fruit can set. Ensure adequate calcium and avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen.
Advanced: Cold Treatment
Exposing seedlings to controlled cold can increase flowers and fruit. When the 3rd true leaf appears, grow at a minimum night temp of 53-55°F (12-13°C) for 4 weeks with full sun. Return to 70°F (21°C) thereafter. (Seed 1-2 weeks earlier if using this technique).
Pests & Diseases
To prevent bacterial spot and Phytophthora: drip irrigate only, plant in well-drained soils, and follow a 4-year crop rotation. Prevent blossom end rot with adequate soil calcium and regular moisture. All seed lots are tested for bacterial spot (though negative tests do not guarantee 100% freedom from disease).
Harvest & Storage
Pick the first peppers promptly when they reach full size (green) to encourage further fruit set across the season. Wash and hold harvested peppers at 45°F (7°C) and 95% relative humidity.
